Members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), Region VIII, Regional Anti-Illegal Drug Group, Regional Public Safety Battalion raided the Abuyog Leyte Penal Colony and left one inmate dead on the spot after resisting authorities early this morning.
CIDG, the primary investigation arm of the Philippine National Police (PNP), were in the premises following up Mayor Rolando Espinosa of Albuera, Leyte’s claim that his son Kerwin gets his drug supply from the Abuyog Penitentiary. With them was a search warrant for inmate Edgard Allan Alvarez aka Egay.
It can be recalled that PNP Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa said in an interview last week that there is a big time Chinese drug lord incarcerated in the Abuyog Leyte Penal Colony.
PNP Region 8 Chief Inspector and spokesperson Maria Bella Rentuaya said that Egay allegedly threw a bomb at the raiding team. When his attempts failed, he then fired at the team with a .45 calibre. The raiding team then returned fire and killed Egay in the process.
Authorities recovered a .45 calibre, one .38 calibre, a big packet of marijuana and undetermined amount of shabu in his person.
Egay was facing a murder case and is also a noted drug lord.
As of press time, the search among inmates for contraband still continues.
