Batang Gilas suffered their second loss in the FIBA-Asia U-18 Championships

After routing a 97-79 win against the Iraq to take their first win, the Batang Gilas were outmatched by the taller Chinese team which gave the young Filipinos their second loss in the elimination round.

Batang Gilas had their second loss after taking on China to a 95-66 loss on Sunday afternoon in Tehran, Iran in the FIBA-Asia U-18 Championships.

China started the game with a 15-0 run in the opening quarter while Batang Gilas only had their first basket in the 5:40 mark of the first quarter via JV Gallego’s free throws. At the end of the first quarter, China led the game with a 15-point deficit.

However, Batang Gilas had their game get going and recovered in the second quarter, only getting outscored by a single point, 20-19, but the taller Chinese responded with a 21-13 run in the third quarter to increase their led to 24 points to put the young Filipinos 70-46 entering the final quarter. The Chinese team never looked back and had their third win; China is now 3-0 in first round.

Jolo Mendoza led Batang Gilas with 19 points, and Gallego finished with 12 points. Joshua Sinclair only had four points and five rebounds in the game after having a powerful game against the Iraqis last Saturday which he records a double-double game.

China was led by Runwang Du with 17 points, while Wu, Du, Taruike also had a double digits points which helped China take the W.

Despite having their second loss, Batang Gilas still has a chance to qualify to the next round, they still have 2 games left in which they need to win to advance to the quarter finals. Batang Gilas will take on the winless Thailand and India who has a 1-2 record in the bracket.

The Champion, 1st runner-up and the 2nd runner-up will take the 3 spots to qualify for the FIBA Under-19 World Championships next year.
