President Rodrigo Duterte announced that he will sign an executive order declaring October 26 as holiday in Cebu, to honor Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardina Vidal’s burial day.
Duterte made the pronouncement when he visited the wake of Vidal at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
At the wake, Duterte sat beside Archbishop Palma and Vidal’s younger brother, Juanitio. Palma thanked Duterte for visiting the wake of his brother despite his hectic schedule. Duterte then, apologized that he was not immediately able to fly to Cebu because of his schedule,but said he felt the need to condole with the Cebuanos.
Vidal was the Archbishop of Cebu for 29 years, yet died on October 18 due to septic shock, one week after he was rushed to the hospital for fever and shortness of breath. He was also a native of Mogpog, marinduque and was appointed by Pope John Paul II Coadjutor Archbishop of Cebu in 1981. He then became the Archbishop on August 24, 1982.
