Thirty years since token of commemorations were given to EDSA revolution where stories of people were coming out saying that the spirit of EDSA was already declining long before the same people started accusing President Rodrigo Duterte of demeaning the spirit.
And for thirty years, It has always been all about celebrating the anniversary such that a generation of Filipinos only knew about Aquino, how Ninoy Aquino was killed, how his death brought in the Yellow movement and how Corazon Aquino was pushed to bring back democracy. It was the same story, over and over again.
However on Sunday, we all saw democracy at its noisiest and it became noisier because of Jim Paredes who confronted supporters of President Duterte along EDSA as the country marked the 31st anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution.
Paredes is one of the most vocal critics of Duterte. During the 31st anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution he went viral garnering different reactions from netizens after confronting youths supporters of Duterte.
Paredes was questioning the Duterte supporters regarding the alleged extra judicial killing of the current administration. He even told members of the Duterte Youth that the President is accountable for the deaths of thousands drug suspects.
Based on a video posted, Paredes attempted to engage with the Duterte Youth members in a debate about their “deluded” support to a President who is supposedly responsible for 7,000 deaths in the country.
Jim asked an unnamed Duterte Youth member, “Look at me. You can’t even look. Duwag!”
(Look at me. You can’t even look. Coward!)
Speaking to another Duterte Youth member, Jim said: “Look at me. Now tell me. Gusto mo ba si Duterte?”
(Look at me. Now tell me. Do you like Duterte?
The guy wearing a cap and reading glasses answered, “Of course.”
Jim asked again, “He’s not responsible for 7,000 deaths?”
The same guy answered, “Still being investigated.”
Jim firmly retorted, “Ok, great! Lie to yourself!
“You’re an intelligent guy? But you know what? Hindi mo matanggap na talagang deluded ka.”
(You’re an intelligent guy. But you know what? You can’t even accept that you are deluded.)
Jim was referring to the Philippine National Police’s report that 7,080 people were killed due to incidents linked to the “war on drugs” from “July 1, 2016” to “January 31, 2017.”
Jim asked again. “Did you believe people can just be killed before Duterte won? Of course not!
“So why do you believe now that they can do it? He even said so.
“He (Duterte) even told the citizens, patayin n’yo ang mga addict. Sabi niya sa mga pulis, ‘pag walang baril, mag-iwan kayo ng baril. Hindi n’yo naririnig iyun? Total denial pa kayo,” he said.
“Wake up, Pilipino tayo!”
(Duterte even told the citizens, kill the drug addicts. He told police, if the drug suspects are not armed, plant guns. Have you not heard that. Are you still in total denial? Wake up! We’re Filipinos.)
At one point, the guy wearing a cap and reading glasses asked if Jim is a Filipino citizen.
When Jim confirmed that he is a Filipino citizen, the guy asked, “Why are there issues that you are Filipino-Australian?”
Jim heatedly replied, “Because they are inventing it! I have two citizenships: Filipino and senior.”
The singer further grilled the Duterte Youth members with questions about their perception of truth.
Jim lamented, “What is truth? Imbento ng troll naniniwala kayo? Naniniwala kayo dahil kakampi niyo?
(What is truth? inventing the troll, you believe? You believe because you’re an ally?)
“No! Truth is truth whether it hurts you or it hurts me. No amount of lying can change anything.
“You guys say Australian citizen si Jim. Hindi niyo ba alam na mali kayo?
(You guys say Jim is an Australian citizen. Aren’t you aware that you’re wrong?)
“And yet you insist and insist and insist, hanggang sa maniwala kayo na totoo. What is wrong with your thinking?”
(And yet you insist and insist and insist, until you believe that it’s true. What is wrong with your thinking?)
During the latter part of Jim’s tirades, he asked the Duterte Youth group: “Are you paid to do this? Are you?”
The video went viral and many netizens were not impressed by Paredes approached towards one of the supporters.
On the other hand, after the reported confrontation with a group of young Duterte supporters, Arnell Ignacio challenged Paredes to a live one-on-one debate.
In his Facebook post, he pointed out that the Duterte Youth supporters had the right to launch a protest since it was open to everyone.
“Jim, you must admit that was nasty. Shouting at those kids who were just standing there and holding on to a tarpaulin stating their beliefs.
“EDSA has no exclusivity. Remember, you invited everybody to come. They did.” Arnell was referring on a twitter post of Paredes he invited everybody to join the EDSA commemoration , not just the yellow supporters but everyone was welcome to attend the People Power Anniversary Rally.

Arnell also criticized Paredes for shouting at the Duterte Youth members.
“And when you were shouting at them, they didn’t answer back in a fashion similar to yours. Probably they just didn’t know how.
“Why don’t you take somebody who will answer you back? Si Bruce Rivera o kaya ako.”
(Why don’t you take somebody who will answer you back? Bruce Rivera or me.”)
“Let’s do this… live.” Arnell added.
Jim naman eh
