The alleged Maute leader, Cayamura Maute was arrested in a Task Force Davao checkpoint in Sirawan, Toril District, Davao City along with four other companions. Cayamura is the father of Abdullah and Omar Maute, leaders of the Maute terror group in which the government forces has been fighting in Marawi City since May 23.

According to Lt. Col. Nestor Mondia, the Task Force Davao checkpoint commander, they saw a man wearing a surgical mask on-board a black Toyota Grandia Van that was stopped by the Task Force Davao at a checkpoint, around 10:00 a.m. (June 6). When they asked the man to show his face, one of the soldiers noticed his resemblance to the photo on the tarpaulin signs of wanted terrorists posted in all checkpoints in the city.

The checkpoint was operated by personnel of both Davao City Police Office and the Army’s 10th Infantry Division.

Along with Cayamura were identified as Norhana Maute (Daughter of Cayamura), Benzarali Tingao (Husband of Farhana), Congan Alfonso Balauag (Second wife of Cayamura), and Aljohn Salazar Israel (Driver).

In a press briefing, Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, regional director of Philippine National Police XI, said that Cayamura confirmed his identity.

“First of all, basing on the picture muna and secondly, the person confirmed his identity. Of course, we will have other identification procedures later on through his fingerprints and other scientific means of identification,” he said.

Gaerlan added that they are still investigating if Cayamura is one of the rebel Maute group’s top leaders.

“That is still the subject of our investigation. He has the right to remain silent and we will not pursue that matter unless he is assisted by his lawyer,” he said.

Moreover, the TF Haribon chief also said that when asked to verify their identities several ID cards were presented to them which heightened their suspicions. The group was brought to DCPO for further investigation to ascertain their identities. Upon cross-examination, Cayamura who initially presented himself with a different name admitted that he is the wanted Cayamura in terrorist gallery.

Task Force Davao also discovered a grenade, 45 caliber pistol, and P363, 000 cash inside the van. The black Grandia van was impounded as well.

Meanwhile, Eastern Mindanao Command (Easmincom) deputy commander Brigadier General Gilbert Gapay, said that Cayamura will be detained in DCPO under the virtue of arrest order number 1 issued by the secretary of the Department of national Defense (DND) Delfin Lorenana for rebellion.

Police Regional Office (PRO)-Davao regional director chief superintendent Manuel Gaerlan said that Cayamura and Nurjanna Maute already have outstanding warrants of arrest for kidnapping, illegal detention, and illegal possession of explosives issued by the regional trial court in Lanao del Sur. the van The driver of the van who was identified as Esmael Aljon Salazar, was also released. He then claimed that he has no knowledge that he had with him on board a terrorist group as he was just driving a rental van from Cotabato City. However, Gaerlan said that they would still be subject for investigation because of the possibility that the driver is just making an alibi.
