President Duterte Agreed “in Principle” to Miss Universe 2017.
Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach is currently in the Philippines from New York. Part of her agenda was the courtesy call with President Rodrigo Duterte on July 18 wherein they discussed the possibility of hosting the prestigious Miss Universe next year.
Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said the President has already agreed “in principle.” The newly instaled Tourism Secretary also said, “Once Pia announces that Miss Universe is going to happen here, people abroad will start looking at the map and see where the Philippines is. And, we’re saying, we’d love to have you in the Philippines.”
During a a Facebook Live video last July 21, Wurtzbach crowdsourced for tourist spots to take the girls to in . Among the popular destinations mentioned that the DOT are eyeing as well are El Nido in Palawan, Boracay and Cebu.
Wurtzbach is also excited to see the beauty contestants try different Filipino dishes such as adobo, pancit, and kare-kare.
The event’s proposed date is January. This is a tight date to host the event plus the Sinulog in Cebu and Chinese New Year are also going to be held in this month. They are now proposing to the organizers to move the event to May.
Teo said that they are now focused on raising the P560 million needed to host the event. Once the proposal is approved and President Duterte issues an Executive Order, they will begin looking for sponsors.
If ever, it will be the the countries third time to host the event. The last time was in 1994 when Sushmita Sen of India was crowned as the winner.
Meanwhile, the Filipino people are requesting the government to improve the services and facilities of the country’s airports before hosting the event.
Maxine Medina will be competing for the 65th Miss Universe pageant next year.
