On Wednesday, President Rodrigo Duterte met the parents of a nineteen-year old Carl Angelo Arnaiz who died in the hands of Caloocan policemen after allegedly robbing a taxi. Marijuana leaves were also found from the teenager.
The meeting was held at the clubhouse Malacañang Golf Clubhouse past 3 pm before the President proceeded to the 60th anniversary of Social Security System (SSS), where Carl’s parents Carlito and Eva, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II and Public Attorney’s Office chief Persida Acosta were present.
According to Aguirre, President Duterte assured the parents that the investigation to be conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) under Department of Justice (DOJ) will be fair and impartial.
Duterte also ordered Aguirre to take over the investigation of a 19-year old Arnaiz, whom the police accused of mugging a taxi driver.
Contrary to the policemen’s claim that Arnaiz was killed in a shootout, autopsy findings suggested that Arnaiz may have been tortured.
Reynaldo de Guzman, Arnaiz’s 14-year-old companion, was meanwhile found dead in Nueva Ecija on Wednesday.
In a speech during the 60th anniversary celebration of SSS in Quezon City, Duterte said: “You do not kill defenseless persons. I’m sorry but I will pursue the case against the police and, if need be, they should go to jail.”
The killing of Arnaiz and De Guzman followed the death of fellow teenager Kian Delos Santos.
