Jeepney is one of the country’s low-cost modes of transportation. It is tagged by the name “King of the Road.”
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) are pursuing the Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) Modernization Program, as a measure to lower the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. In the said program is the phasing out and the setting of the mandatory 15-year age limit to public utility jeepney (PUJ) units. Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) is long overdue.
“A transport system with modern and roadworthy PUVs plying the national roads prevents pollution and ensures a reliable and safe commute for the ridging public,” explains former LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez.
Here are the advantages of jeepney modernization program.
1. Safe and comfortable transport
Modernized vehicle promise to be clean, roomy, and commuters will have access safer. Modern vehicles will also be provided with GPS navigation system and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor passengers and the drivers, an Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS), speed limiters, dashboard cameras, and Wi-Fi. It will also have easier access for PWDs and senior citizen.
2. New features
The doors will be on the side of the vehicle. It’s also equipped with power steering, and hand brake, and some units are air-conditioned. It also have a bigger passenger accommodation due to longer frame.
3. Drivers and Operators has benefits
Jeepney drivers will get monthly salaries and will also be given opportunities to take part in government-sponsored driving training programs, as well as the operators which involves safety measures in operating PUJs and proper etiquette when dealing with the passengers.
4. Decrease of greenhouse gas emission
Transportation department cited that jeepneys as the biggest source of carbon dioxide emission. The new vehicle is required to either powered by Euro 4 engines or electric powered engine with solar panels for roofs. On the said program, vehicles that are 15-year old will be replaced by vehicles with “low-carbon and low emission technology. Both passengers and drivers it allows less exposure to air pollution.
We can expect to see the modern transport system in this modern development,
However, despite the advantages of the modernized vehicle has to offer, financing is also other concern. Almost all of the drivers and small business operators cannot afford to franchise this new vehicle that the government is soon going to implement the PUV modernization program.
